Abstract

Purpose: We tried to research how nursing major university students, health-related major university students, non-health-related major university students recognize image of nurses and nursing, compare among three groups, grasp causes of image-building, and offer basic data for improving status of nursing as a professional job.
Methods: We distributed 85 copies of questionnaires to each major, that is, total 255 copies to our participants. Among 255 copies of questionnaires, we got total 238 copies and we used 222 copies of them in this research. The questionnaire was developed by Song In Ja, which was modified and compensated later by Heo Guem Hee. The questionnaire consists of total 44 questions. Collected data were analyzed by SPSS 16.0 and EXCEL computer program. The used statistic method was Frequency, Percentage, Mean, Rank, and ANOVA.
Results: The health-related major evaluated nurses have more value and achievement than their works compare to the nursing major and the non health-related major evaluated nurses have more value and achievement than their works compare to the health-related major. The "experience" is the most influential factor of formation of nursing image.
Conclusion: Since we use the non-probability sampling as a sampling method and samples of the research are limited to students who go to University which located Seoul, this research is hard to be generalized. As samples of the research are limited to students who go to University which located Seoul, from now on, samples should be chosen from Universities in different areas and the study should be repeated. Studies to develop strategies to improve nurse images based on nurse image formation factors from this study will be needed.
